The mineral that is used as the lead in pencils is graphite.

The pencil is a stationary that is made up of substances which is enclosed in a thin piece of wood.

It is used mainly for drawing and writing.

For a long time, pencil has been called 'lead pencil' but this is a misnomer.

This is because the actual constituents of the pencil is mainly the graphite with addition of clay and wax.

The major reason for the use of graphite is that carbon atoms present in graphite are bounded by weak van der Waals forces making them slippery and soft.

Therefore, the mineral that is used as the lead in pencils is graphite.
