An opinion concerning the topic of recognizing Whitman's America as the country it is today is the following:
- Yes, I recognize Whitman's America as the country it is today.
- Walt Whitman chose to focus on America's best. He wrote a whole poem devoted to the hard-working people who make this country what it is. He paid tribute to democracy and freedom.
- That does not mean America was not complicated back when Whitman wrote his poems. He was just able to focus on the silver lining. We can do the same today.
- America has problems: some are extremely poor while others get richer by the minute; some pay their way into fancy universities while others never finish high school; some own mansions while others will pay rent their whole lives.
- Still, America is comprised of hard-working people. It is what it is because of those who believe and fight for freedom and equality. To be truthful, America is better now than it was in the past.
