EMERGENCY PLS HELP: Although Perris doesn't want the girls to confess to doing witchcraft in the woods he is pressured to question it. Parris is at the top. sort of a person the people of salem look up to. So, when Mrs.Putnam looks to him to Confess to betty being bewitched he is conflicted. If Parris were to keep denying the accusations could the witch trials be avoided? Or did he like people looking to him as being at the top of society?

(Assuming this is in reference to the Crucible by Aurthur Miller)
Answer:
No, the central theme of the play is that a society worked into hysteria is already on a downhill slide. If Parris had not questioned the girls, certainly the townspeople would have acted on their own accord and taken the matter of witch trials into their own hands.
