Western Lands:
-experienced the most sucess in this area
-land ordinances set precedents for how new states were to be added to the U.S.
Land ordinance of 1785
-organized and divided up northwest territory.
-square mile blocks of land
Northwest ordinance of 1787
-populations under 5,000 had a gov. appointed 4 them
-decided when territory would become a state based on population
-prohibited slavery in these new states
-ordinances were so successful they were kept in the constitution.
Foreign Relations
-govt could not make its own foreign policy
-Britain still had stong influence in america
-maintained trading posts in the northwest territory which was a violation of treaty of paris
-they encouraged indians to attack
-govt could not institute protective tariffs, so the market was flooded with foreign goods. local goods were more expensive.
-many states carried out their own foreign relations.
