A soil horizon is defined as layers of different physical, chemical and biological characteristics. Every soil with its characteristics which consists of layers and horizons to form a soil profile.
The horizons are
- O is regarded as the organic/ humid layer : Here is the surface area of the soil composing of organic matter eg decomposed leaves.
- A is regarded as the Topsoil: Here, parent material together with organic matter are found which serves as a good condition for organisms (earthworms)to survive and even plants to thrive.
- E is regarded as site for elluviation: Here, Leaching occurs which strips the layer off it organic matter leaving high concentration of sand and silt particles.
- B is known as the subsoil or area of illuviation: Here minerals together with organic matter that have been leached accumulate here
- C is known as the parent material: Earth’s surface deposits forms the soil
- R is known as the bedrock : Zone for rocks
