  • Direct speech happens when we use someone's own words to tell others what they said.
  • We place what people said between quotation marks and do not change anything.
  • For example: Nina said, "I am afraid of big dogs."

  • Indirect or reported speech happens when we use our own words to tell others what people said.
  • We have to make some changes according to who said what when.
  • For example, if the speaker was a man, we place "he" where "I" was used.
  • If the speaker said "today", we replace it with "that day". If he said "tomorrow", we use "the following day".
  • We also change the verb tense to the past.
  • For example: simple present-simple past; present perfect-past perfect; will-would, etc.

  • Let's take the previous example and change it:

- Nina said, "I am afraid of big dogs." (direct)

- Nina said that she was afraid of big dogs. (indirect)
