Gabriel and Martin argue about full quarter because Martin doesn’t want to fight against the British because he knows how horrible war is. His son Gabriel signed up almost immediately to fight the British. Gabriel is captured by British troops and Thomas, another of Martin’s sons, is murdered by British general Tavington when he attempts to set Gabriel free after he is captured. This drives Martin to lead a militia to fight the British Martin is in favor of full quarter and Gabriel is not.
