john quincy adams the secretary of state negotiated the treaty by acquiring florida from spain and setting a boundary between the U.S and new spain which is now mexico. It is also known as the transcontinental treaty of 1819
From 1817 to 1825, John Quincy Adams was Secretary of State for the government of James Monroe. While in that position he negotiated the Treaty of Adams-Onis, which played a decisive role in the acquisition of Florida.
The Treaty of Adams-Onis was the result of the negotiation between Spain and the United States to fix the border between the United States and the then viceroyalty of New Spain. The negotiation began in 1819 and although it was signed in that same year, it was not ratified until February 22, 1821 by both parties.
