Antifederalists were the people who were against the ratification of the United States Constitution.  

  • Many of them supported a weak central government because they equated a strong central government with British tyranny.  
  • Some antifederalists wanted to encourage democracy and were afraid of a strong government because they thought it would be dominated by wealthy people.
  • They also believed that if states were ceding too much power to the federal government.  They also objected to the lack of any guarantee of individual rights in the constitution.  
  • Mostly small, self-reliant, and independent farmers supported  Anti Federalism. Most farmers were mostly uneducated and provincial.
  • Their crops, families, and local matters were more important for they paid little attention to the foreign countries and were content with the weak confederate government.
  • Antifederalists were lead by James Winthrop, Patrik Henry, George Mason, and Melancton Smith. Patrik Henry was the main leader.
