In the story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, Red Sammy Butts who owns a gas station and the "Tower" restaurant waited for a family that was on a trip to Georgia.
While discussing with the family, he laments how it is difficult to find someone to trust these days. He explained to his customers how he lost some money after giving two people gas on credit.
He also laments how people could leave their screen doors unlatched some years ago but that is not the case today. The grandmother agrees with Red Sammy on his view that it is hard to trust anyone these days. His wife also agrees with him.
So, Red Sammy feels as if people cannot be trusted because of his personal experiences with people who ripped him off.
