After industrialization, the concept of traditional American families changed. Yes, men were the ones that had the role of providing, but many times the wage they earned was low. Their jobs in the manufacturing industries were very low that wifes had to get some other jobs in the home to help the family. There were also many single mothers that had to raise children and were the head of the family.
