DISCUSS: Compare the morals of the main
characters in "Ruthless" to the main
characters in "Button, Button." Which
character from "Ruthless" is most morally
similar to Norma? Which character from
"Ruthless" is most morally similar to
Arthur? Explain your answers.

Respuesta :

When reading "Ruthless" and "Button, Button" we can see that Norma is more like Judson Webb, while Judson's wife is more like Arthur.

We can reach this conclusion in the following way:

  • Judson is more inconsequential in his actions and shows no concern for human life if his wishes are granted.
  • Norma is also inconsequential, as she believes that meeting her own needs is more important than other people's lives.
  • Judson's wife doesn't agree with the way he acts, but she's completely powerless about it.
  • Similarly, Arthur is more coherent, does not agree with Norma's position, but is completely powerless to how she acts.

Importantly, "Ruthless," tells the story of how Judson, upon realizing that his whiskey is being stolen, puts poison in the whiskey bottle so that the thief dies while drinking it, but ends up drinking the poisoned whiskey and dying right away.

"Button, Button" on the other hand, tells the story of Arthur and Norma, an indebted couple, who are offered to receive a large amount of money if they press the button that is in a box. However, once they press the button, they will kill a person they don't know. Marta presses the button and ends up taking her husband's life.
