The practice is necessary to gain expertise. A popular idea these past few years is that a person should at least devote 10,000 hours of their time to practice a subject before being expertise at the field. A study in 1993 state that the most accomplished violinists at the music academy had spent over 10,000 hours practicing violin before the age of 20. This idea was first popularized by Malcolm Gladwell’s book titled Outliers. In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell used the term “the ten-thousand-hour rule” to explain this idea.

 

In his book, Gladwell wrote a lot of examples to support his “ten-thousand-hour rule”. One of the examples being The Beatles, the infamous band. Gladwell pointed out that The Beatles spent around 10,000 hours to play music in the early 1960s. Another example is Bill Gates. Gladwell pointed out that Bill Gates used 10,000 hours of his life to practicing programming. After that much of practice, he finally created Microsoft. Gladwell believes that a person can become expert in any field if they devote at least 10,000 hours to study and practice about that subject.  

 

This is not only an idea, but it is also supported by studies. Anders Ericson, a world-renowned expert on peak performance did studies about experts from a lot of background, including sports, music, medicine, and chess. Ericson was the researcher behind the study that Gladwell used to make the “ten-thousand-hour rule”
