The legend of this creature originated in a number of places, but mainly Iran and Egypt.
Its features include the body and tail of a lion and the wings, talons, and head of an eagle.
This creature symbolizes courage and boldness. In architecture It is depicted as a mix between eagle and lion; In literature it appeared in John Milton's paradise lost (the second book, I believe), in fairy tales (of course), and, believe it or not in the Harry Potter series! :) In art, he is depicted as an animal with 4 feet, the body of lion, and the head and wings of an eagle.
I hope this helps you out!
Good luck!
