The story 'On the sidewalk bleeding' is based on this young protagonist named Andy who has being knifed by a rival group the Guardians. The protagonist Andy is a member of the group named the Royals.
Andy considers himself to be a proud part of the gang and does not mind flaunting a jacket with the Royals printed at the back.
At the end of the story, when someone refuses to help him, An-dy is hit with this sudden realization that:
a) he would never be able to meet his girl friend, and
b) that he does not want to be known as a 'Royal', he wants to be known as a person, an individual who had his own identity other than the group.
Realizing this he immediately tries to take the jacket off. Its the jacket that got him killed. Had he not been wearing this jacket, he'd have still been alive as Andy.
In the end, a sad and grim realization concludes the story - Andy realizes who he could have been and what he was trying to be, and how devastating the tag of being a Royal has been for him.
This self-realization is central to the story and concludes how he probably missed out on life so early because of his choices.
His wish to be recognized as just Andy remains unfulfilled as when the police come they report him as a Royal, and not Andy, they do not care a young man has died, because the police blame such groups for unnecessary violence.
