Respuesta :

The reason that Jefferson and the Second Continental Congress demanded the independence of the colonies was that the colonies had long suffered under an absolute despot.

  • This absolute despot was King George III, who disdained appeals for the amelioration of the unjust British policies towards the colonies.

  • According to Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, the despotic monarch had inflicted innumerable abuses on the colonies on a large scale.

  • If the change of government was not activated at that time, the Continent would suffer further deterioration in the much desired liberty.

  • King George had imposed many taxes that was suffocating the colonies’ freedom.  Unfortunately, the attitude of the British parliament and people to the appeals showed that they were not perturbed.

Thus, the change of an unjust government became inevitable, hence the need for the independence of the colonies from British misrule.
