Annie's father throws the sculpture away into the lake because he was afraid of owning up to his evil past as a prison guard who mercilessly tortured prisoners.

  • Throwing the sculpture away does not accomplish Annie's father's real purpose for hiding his past identity.

  • Instead, it actually exposed him for who he was and is.  In the sculpture, he looked downcast and defeated.

  • Again, after throwing the sculpture away, its representation as the strength of a father immediately changed to unacquainted shame and lies.

Thus, this "Book of the Dead" by Edwidge Danticat shows how Annie finally lost her trust in her father, warning against the danger of distrust.
