To develop the idea that the Twin Towers were special buildings, the author of "The Amazing Boat Rescue of September 11," Allison Friedman, describes the structure of the towers as 110 stories, housing the World Trader Center and being two of the tallest buildings available in the world.

The author also indicated that the Twin Towers could be seen many miles around.  For example, in the non-fiction, Thomas's mum informed him that he could locate his way home if he could look at the Twin Towers, whenever he lost his bearing.

Allison also showed that the Twin Towers accommodated many people from different walks of life: 35,000 workers and many more visitors.

Thus, the Twin Towers helped people to discover the direction to go and provided important landmarks in the life of New Yorkers.
