Q10 1.0 An empty rectangular cage measures 3 m by 4 m by 12 m. What is the distance from one corner of the cage to the diagonally opposite corner? Give your answer as an exact number of metres.

The distance from  one corner of the cage to the diagonally opposite corner is 5m

The diagonal from one side of the rectangle to another side of the rectangle is known as the hypotenuse. The diagonal divides the rectangle into 2 right-angled triangles

The hypotenuse can be determined using Pythagoras theorem

The Pythagoras theorem : a² + b² = c²

where a = length

b = width

c =  hypotenuse

3² + 4² = c²  

c² = 9 + 16

25 = c²

c = √25

= 5 m
