When the magnet is near, the compass turns and points to it. When the magnet is moved away, the compass turns back to point north and south.

When a magnet is brought in close proximity to a compass ; The needle moves towards the direction of the magnet.   while

when the magnet is moved away ; The compass needle returns back to its initial position ( north-south ) position

The movement of the compass pin when a magnet is brought in close proximity to the compass is due to the magnetic field created between the compass and the magnet in close proximity. The compass pin is made from steel ( magnetic material ).  while

When the magnet is removed the compass pin returns to its initial position (north-south ) position because the magnetic field disappears.

Hence we can conclude that When a magnet is brought in close proximity to a compass ; The needle moves towards the direction of the magnet.   while when the magnet is moved away ; The compass needle returns back to its initial position ( north-south ) position.
