This is how I changed it:
The chef, named Robert, ran into the kitchen because he smelled smoke. He was sure that his assistant had left the sauce boiling on the back burner. Robert headed for the cabinet that held the fire extinguisher, but when he got there the cabinet was empty. Filled with anger, surprise, and confusion he began trying to think of an idea. Then it came to him, he would use his apron. Robert went to the sink and soaked his apron with water. He quickly placed it over the flames in the pan and they smothered out. As the fire went out, steam billowed from the pan. The kitchen was filled with smoke and the sauce was ruined.
