My own definition of comedy is movie, play, or broadcast program intended to make an audience laugh.An example of a comedy is Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.  A more or less humorous treatment of characters and situation and a happy ending; such plays or films collectively.

However, in literature the meaning might vary; it is true that comedies can have comical elements, but the literary convention is different. A Shakespearean comedy is a theatrical representation that deals with humorosly confusing, ridiculous situations in which the main characters end in marriage. It is of importance to mention that a comedy starts with averse circumstances and end in happiness.
