The Lusitania was an English ship that carried passengers on transatlantic voyages. During WWI the British armed their ships for war, including the Lusitania. As a response, the Germans declared the surrounding waters of Britain as a war zone. When the Lusitania left form New York to Liverpool and entered these waters on May 7, 1915, the germans shot it without any warnings. The attack lead to 1,128 civilian deaths including 128 american citizens. This event made the anti-german sentiment stronger an eventually lead to the United States joining the conflict.
