A synthesis reaction is a chemical reaction in which two different atoms interact together to produce a different molecule or compound.
Sodium is an alkali metal with the atomic number 11. It has a +1 valence electron in its outermost shell.
Chlorine is a halogen family element with the atomic element 17. It requires an electron to complete its octet structure.
That is why the bonding reaction between them is called Electrovalent or Ionic bonding.
When 2 moles of Sodium (Na) combines with 1 mole of Chlorine (Cl), we have:
[tex]\mathbf{2 Na_{(s)} + Cl_2_{(g)} \ \to \ 2NaCl_{(s)} }[/tex]
Therefore, from the above reaction, we can conclude that there are two molecules of sodium produced when two atoms of sodium (Na) combine with one molecule of chlorine gas (Cl2).
