The main goal of Common Sense was to persuade Americans that they should declare their independence from Great Britain. Paine wanted to assure the people that they did not need Great Britain to succeed and they would be better off without being ruled by them.
In the first sentence of Common Sense, Paine says that everything he will be saying is just simple facts and common sense, making all Americans feel as if they could read it, even if they were not properly educated. He uses powerful language, asserting that they do not need Great Britain whatsoever.
