With the development of cuneiform in Mesopotamia over 5000 years ago, poetry began to evolve. The ancient rulers' power over their subjects was described in these poems that were discovered on clay tablets.

How long has poetry existed?

Poetry has existed for thousands of years in many forms. However, considering that the epic poem dates back to the 20th century B.C., we can consider it to be the first example of poetry. The sonnet form and its earliest occurrence in the 13th century may then be discussed by going hundreds of years in the future.

Most of the earliest poetry that has been discovered is in the style of epic poetry, some of which existed centuries before humans started recording their stories in writing. Around 2000 B.C., the Sumerians used the "Epic of Gilgamesh," one of the earliest poems, as part of their oral heritage.

Thus, The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest pieces of literature in existence, coming from ancient Mesopotamia. It tells the tale of a Sumerian King who set out to discover the key to immortality.
