Sulla was the leader of the first army to turn against Rome’s government. Marius, by then almost 70 years old, was ordered by vote to replace Sulla. Sulla rebelled. He created a new army and attacked Rome. His rebellion led Rome into a civil war. That civil war lasted a year, caused thousands of deaths, and brought Sulla back to power. Sulla’s influence grew. He was eventually appointed dictator by the Senate. He passed a series of reforms.

Lewis W. Hine was born in September 1874 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the “Sawdust City.” Sawdust “paved” the streets due to the many industrial sawmills. Hine worked in local factories as a youth and attended the State Normal School in Oshkosh as a young adult. Hine left Wisconsin for New York, where he became a teacher and school photographer. Hine was determined to teach his students compassion and respect for immigrants, so he began to photograph immigrants coming through Ellis Island.

Soon Hine became a full-time photographer. He produced documentary photography for social reform. He showed the world the real people that he found: children working, kids in mills, orphans on the streets, sweatshops, adult laborers, immigrant families, and struggling individuals.
