The problem behind rising sea levels is climate change. Scientists say that the Earth's atmosphere is getting warmer. They explain that when the sun warms the Earth, gases in the atmosphere trap the sun's heat. The planet stays warm. Without these greenhouse gases, the Earth would be too cold for life. But scientists suggest the problem is that too much greenhouse gas is being pumped into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are released when people burn fossil fuels. Trees absorb greenhouse gas, but many forests are cut down. Fewer trees means that there is more gas to trap heat. For these and other reasons, the Earth's temperature rises.
