To reduce Air Pollution by automobiles, Emission Testing has been implemented.
The pollutants produced from vehicle carries toxic gases like Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Volatile Organic Compounds and Sulphur Dioxide.
Research has shown that an average car can create almost 6 tonnes of pollutants each year.
These effluents released from the vehicles are the main ingredient of smog that causes respiratory problem, skin irritation and in extreme causes cancer.
The Emission testing procedure helps in gauging the car's emission and ability to track the pollutants it releases.
A test can potentially review the levels of pollutants such as CO2, Hydrocarbons, CO, NOx and other such emissions releasing from car.
Different Emission Testing procedures are:
- On-Board Diagnostic inspection
- Acceleration Simulation Mode (ASM) test
- Two Speed Idle test
Once all the test is cleared, the car can be legally registered and is safe for driving.
The driver should maintain the requisite paperwork and if required have to undergo another test in near future.
If the Vehicle could not pass the test:
- The car would be emitting excessive HC or CO above the mentioned standards.
- Unable to collect valid exhaust sample due to leak in the exhaust system or poor engine adjustment.
- OBD emission control components or the Dashboard MIL are malfunctioning.
- The gas cap is not creating a tight seal and could be leaking vapors.
These above issues can be remedied with regular maintenance by undergoing diagnostic test.
