Fundamental and Harmonics
Most vibrating objects have more than one resonant frequency and those used in musical instruments typically vibrate at harmonics of the fundamental. A harmonic is defined as an integer (whole number) multiple of the fundamental frequency.

There is direct relationship between harmonics and resonance frequency.

  • A harmonic is a wave with a frequency that is a positive integer multiple of the frequency of the original wave whereas, resonance frequency is the frequency at which the oscillation reaches to its maximum point.
  • The lowest resonant frequency is known as the fundamental, while on the other hand, the higher resonant frequencies are called overtones.
  • All resonant frequencies are multiples of the fundamental, and are called harmonics.
  • So we can conclude that there is a direct relationship between harmonics and resonance frequency.
