The opening of more trade routes caused travelers to exchange many things: animals, spices, ideas, and diseases. The Silk Roads stretched across Eurasia, connecting East and West for centuries. At its height, the network of trade routes enabled merchants to travel from China to the Mediterranean Sea, carrying with them high-value commercial goods, the exchange of which encouraged urban growth and prosperity. Cities grew up along the Silk Roads as essential hubs of trade and exchange, here merchants and travellers came to stop and rest their animals and begin the process of trading their goods.

Established during the official trade with the West by the Han dynasty in China in 130 B.C., the roads of the Silk Road remained open until the Ottoman empire boycotted and closed trade with China in 1453 A.D. the Ottoman Empire.
