In the context of this text, the effects of being the type of person to follow the crowd is that it can stop you from doing things the way you want to deep down. On top of that, you don't realize until after how it can change you, with the consequences on top of it as well. I think these hunts wouldn't have been possible without the support of others because if everyone is living in fear, they should want to rely on others to help get through it. I think people were supporting these prejudiced hunts because at the time, they couldn't think of any other scenarios that would help them get through this, considering how they were living.
