2. Hypotonic: if the water concentration of the cell's cytoplasm is lower than that of the medium surrounding the cell. Then, osmosis will result in the cell gaining water.
3. Hypertonic: if the water concentration inside the cell is higher than that of the medium surrounding the cell. The number of water molecules diffusing out will be more than that entering the cell and the cell will shrink.
