Half the amount of normal cells. These are called haploid cells, or gametes. Gametes include sperm and egg. When the egg (23) gets fertilized by a sperm (23), you create your first diploid cell (46) called a zygote. This zygote then undergoes mitosis to become an embryo, and then eventually a baby child. That child continues to undergo mitosis until it has developed into an adult.
