Fats, also known as triglycerides, stores energy, assists in body insulation, and protects the organs. The structure of the cell membrane is made up of phospholipids. Cholesterol and hormones are made up of steroids. The leaves and fruits of several plants are coated with wax to avoid losing water.

Fats provide long-term energy storage, insulation and protection. Phospholipids are the main component of cell  membranes. Waxes provide a waterproof coating on leaves and feathers.Steroids are part of cell membranes and chemical messengers in the body.
