In 2012, the Ramnit worm hacked about 45,000 facebook accounts. This Ramnit was describes as “a multi-component malware family which infects Windows executable as well as HTML files” (quoted from Microsoft Malware Protection Center). It hacked these accounts stealing the login credentials (the user name and the password).

As reported by facebook, most of the stolen accounts were in the UK and in France.

In July 2012, there were reports that 45,000 Face book login details belonging to its users across Europe, particularly the UK and France have been hacked by a new malware known as Ramnit worm.

Ramnit has been in existence since April 2010 and was known to be used by attackers to steal someone’s banking details.

Remnits has been described as a multi-component malware family. It is a new malware known to infect windows executable and HTML files.  

Remints is used by attackers to steal sensitive information.

Some of the sensitive information includes

  • FTP credentials
  • Browsers cookies

Symantec reports in 2011 revealed Remnits is responsible for 17.3 percent of the entire current malware software infections.

The Researchers confirmed the motives behind the attack; they suspected the attackers’ logins into Face book user accounts and send a malicious link to their Face book friends to further spread the malware.

For users that are worried about this situation, the best thing they could do to secure their accounts is to change their password. Generally, it is advisable for any person that have online accounts to change their password regularly to keep it safe
