In continuous tense the form ing is used with the verb which is called present participle. It can be used with the auxiliary verb 'to be' to form the continuous tense. Adding "ing" to the base form of a verb creates the present participle. For example, eat is the base form of the verb to eat but adding ing makes it eating so it becomes present participle.
