At the age of 62, Matisse underwent abdominal surgery. No longer able to stand at an easel to paint, he began creating artworks that incorporated paper cutouts. He often worked from his bed or a chair, continuing to create great art until the day he died at age 84.

In his Paris studio with its windows looking out over a monastery garden, in 1908 Matisse created one of his most important works of the period 1908-1913.
