Over the last three decades, Nepal has seen a massive surge in private schools. In Kathmandu, nearly 70% of students attend private schools.
These private schools provide students with a much higher quality of education than public schools. However, almost all private schools function like profit-oriented firms. There are several private schools in Nepal that have been able to establish themselves as good educational institutions in certain places due to their successful value-based education efforts.
One of the advantages of having a private school in Nepal is that the language of instruction and communication is English. In private schools, everyone is encouraged to speak in English, while in the public schools, Nepali is used. Private schools have more resources compared to the public ones. Teacher motivation is also greater in private counterparts.
Some of the drawbacks of private school in Nepal are high tuition fees due to privatization of education. It has also resulted in large class sizes, less qualified and part-time teachers. Most of the resources are devoted to marketing in attractive school buildings and well-equipped classrooms, but they promote fixed-term contracts, low wages and long working hours for teachers.
The existence of private school and the public school in Nepal has caused confusion regarding the provision of quality education. The schools should have a holistic approach to adopt to better their institutions and education system.
