Whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, cholera and starvation were epidemic along the way, and historians estimate that more than 5,000 Cherokee died as a result of the journey.
They had to leave the lands where they and their ancestors had lived for many generations after being defeated and moved out by the American settlers. Not only was it sad, but it was also a difficult journey.
