You should look at the titles first, to make sure that you're reading the right thing. Once you're done with that, you should skim the text a little before you dive right in, making sure that you don't waste your time on something that's completely unrelated to what you're trying to read about. After you find the right place to read, you should take your time to take in every word, and remember what it was about, in case you accidentally forget. Look at the pictures, to see how it supports the text, or the diagrams, if you're reading a science/logic related thing.
