What is Weathering?
Weathering is defined as the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth.
Weathering is a slow and irregular process caused by different factors called agents which are - Water, Ice, Acids, Salts, Temperature.
Weathering along with Erosion constantly keeps on changing the geography of the earth as it lead to change in the landscape of the earth.

Physical Weathering:
Physical Weathering is also known as mechanical weathering is the process causing integration without climate change.
The primary process involved in it is Abrasion.
Factors involved are- Temperature, Pressure, Frost
It is prominent in little or no vegetative area such as deserts, mountains
Chemical Weathering:
Chemical Weathering changes rock composition transforming into different chemical reactions when interact with minerals.
This weathering is a gradual and ongoing process as the rock minerology adjust to the environment near the surface.
The most important process involved here is Oxidation and Hydrolysis.
The process is enhanced by water, oxygen, biological agent such as microbial and plant root metabolism acids.
Chemical Weathering occurs faster at higher temperature with warm and humid conditions.
Chemical Weathering is further divided into- Solution, Hydrolysis and Oxidation
Solution Weathering- Removal of rock by acidic rainwater in solution i.e. dissolved CO2 containing rainwater. This process is also known as Carbonation.
Hydrolysis Weathering- Acidic water breakdown of rock producing clay and suitable soils.
Oxidation Weathering- Rock breakdown by oxygen and water giving rusty appearance .
Biological Weathering:
It is the weakening and subsequent breakdowns by plants, animals and microbes of rock.
Growing roots of plants can put pressure on rock and this weathering can also lead to chemical weathering.
Microbial activity breaks down rock minerals by altering chemical composition of the rock making it more weather sensitive.
