How does civil disobedience help us solve conflict? Is civil disobedience still effective in today's society?

You can take the Vietnam War for instance civil disobedience meaning the people in the US were constantly rioting and protesting the war and saying how much that they didn't want to be in it so eventually the conflict / war stopped.
