In “The Story of an Hour,” the character of Louise finds out about the death of her husband, at first she grieves him violently, in a reaction that makes sense since she perceives him as a kind man. However, when she finds herself alone, she starts to consider the fact that she is going to be free now of the obligations imposed to her as a woman because of marriage, and this thought excites her, even though she tries to block this feeling (a socially imposed impulse).

This thought she has privately is one of the main premises, it marks the independence she now will have.
