Although the proposes otherwise, most of the war in the trenches was fought with silence and shovels. Countries completely opposing each other would be just meters apart below the ground, waiting for the other to make a move. If you went over the top of the trench, you would almost instantly be killed... this lead to wars being led into a stalemate, sometimes being won only by out starving the enemy.
