Maybe Dan and Kit stop the riot somehow. Then once the riot is stopped they untie Carlo. Finally the three of them escape with Dan, Kit, and Carlo riding animals out. When they stop the riot they don't hurt the animals they just put them in one spot. If they were magical they could use magic to stop the riot and keep all the animals safe. I hope this helps.
