Satchel Paige was a talented black baseball pitcher who laid the groundwork for Major League baseball to include black players like Jackie Robinson. Satchel Paige was such a talented pitcher that his catchers had to cushion their gloves in order to handle his pitches. Branch Rickey chose to sign Jackie Robinson to his Major League baseball team rather than Satchel Paige because Jackie was a stronger player and a more likeable person.

I believe the main idea is that the amount of talent you have doesn't determine the kind of person you are hence why jackie robinson was signed instead of satchel paige. Satchel Paige had more talent but since Jackie Robinson was a much better team player and had a better attitude he was chosen over Paige
