In 1793, the Chinese Emperor Qian Long sent a letter to the British King George III as an answer to a previous letter. King George had been interested in posting a representative to the imperial court and in expanding trade with China. The answer that Qian Long sent to the King was condescending. It illustrates the opinion that China had of the world at the time. The emperor assumed his country was the height of civilization, and was not interested in significantly cooperating with other countries.
