True, I believe. Thomas Jefferson had originally written a 168 word passage on how villainous Slavery was, and how it was brought to the colonies by the British crown. It was cut from the final document.

The US constitution was ratified 1789.The international slave trade in the US would not be abolished until 1808. Further down the road, slavery itself would not be outlawed until 1865 after the civil war (through the 13th amendment).
