In order to run for a position in the Cuban House of Representatives, Fidel Castro joined a reformist political party. However, an army general by the name of Fulgencio Batista ousted the administration and seized control of the country just before the elections. Castro quickly rose to prominence as the face of the anti-Batista movement.
Castro oversaw an assault on an army camp in 1953. Castro was given a 15-year prison term after the attack was put down. Castro was released from prison after completing barely two years of his sentence.
